A more natural Christmas

I always liked the idea of a Christmas wreath, but not the plasticky

things sprayed with fake snow that you get at most florists'. Now Brooklyn-based
 Saipua makes them just right: very natural and a bit wild. Would love one like
 that on my door.

 

While a small minority of environment-conscious and style-savvy people are
digging the whole idea of locally produced Christmas presents and home-
baked cakes, to most Lithuanians Christmas is still associated with the glitter
of "made in China" gifts sold in every mall and supermaket. Pushing my shopping
cart throught the plastic Christmas jungle in my local shopping mall I always end
up thinking: Do we really need all this junk? Is this what Christmas is about?

I would like to wish everyone a more natural Christmas. What we need is less plastic
and more love.



Man patinka kalėdinio vainiko idėja, bet jokiu būdu ne tie plastiku dvelkiantys, dirbtiniu

sniegu nupurkšti vainikai, kokius siūlo dauguma floristų ir prekybos centrų. O štai Brukline

įsikūrusio gėlių salono Saipua kūriniai - tiesiog idealiai neidealūs, natūralūs ir išdykę.

Norėčiau kažko tokio ant savo durų.

 

Kalbant apie natūralumą. Nedidelė grupė "žaliai" mąstančių žmonių

švenčia Kalėdas kitaip - su vietinių gamintojų dovanomis ir namie keptais pyragais.

Tačiau daugumai Kalėdos vis dar asocijuojasi su blizgiomis "made in China" dovanomis,

kuriomis kasmet užverčiami prekybos centrai. Stumdama pirkinių vežimelį per plastikines

 savo vietinio prekybcentrio džiungles, visada kremtuosi: argi mums tikrai reikia viso

 šito šlamšto? Ar Kalėdos apie tai?

 

Linkiu jums natūralesnių Kalėdų. Mažiau plastiko ir daugiau meilės mums visiems

išeitų į naudą.

So stylish it hurts

When I saw this apartment in the Desire to Inspire blog,

I had mixed feelings: on one hand, I loved the chic furniture and carefully

thought-out decor, on the other, I felt slightly irritated by the enormous ultra sexy

fashion photographs. And god knows I love fashion photography. So I am undecided

whether to like it or not. Is it trying too hard? 

The apartment was designed by Brazilian Diego Revollo, and the owner apparently is

a stylist. My guess is that to some stylists such large scale images are like typography

 posters to common folk. But imagine bringing your parents, or better

still, grandparents over for dinner...

 

 

Radusi šį interjerą Desire to Inspire bloge, iš pradžių aiktelėjau iš susižavėjimo,

tačiau antras žvilgsnis entuziazmą kiek atšaldė. Labai mėgstu mados fotografiją, bet

šiame bute ji a. labai erotiška (sakyčiau, komerciškai, o ne meniškai);

b. labai didelio formato. Mane truputį erzina... Kita vertus, butas išties elegantiškas ir stilingas.

Jei dekoratorius Diego Revollo ir truputį persistengė, tai turbūt toks buvo buto savininko,

stilisto, pageidavimas. Gal iš tiesų kai kuriems mados industrijoje dirbantiems žmonėms

tokia (komercinė) didelio formato erotika tas pat, kas paprastiems mirtingiesiems -

spausdinimo šriftų plakatai. Bet įsivaizduokite, kad pasikvietėte vakarienės tėvus,

arba dar geriau, senelius...

Longing for green

I have nothing against snow and leafless trees for two or three weeks. A month.

O.K., two... But the prospect of not seeing a patch of green in five (!!!) months is

 daunting. There is an effective solution to this: spending the winter abroad.

This is something I am definitely going to do sooner or later. For now, I get my dose of

green at home. Potted plants are indespensible this time of the year; not only do they clean

the air in our homes but also lift our spirits. Especially if it's a whole army of potted

plants on the window sill as in the room below. And I would totally love a tree at

home like the one in the last image; don't know what kind of plant it is,

 but it looks stunning.

Neturiu nieko prieš sniegą ir nuogus medžius porą savaičių. Tris. Mėnesį. Bet nematyti

žalio lopinėlio penkis mėnesius, tai jau liūdna perspektyva. Sprendimas yra:

praleisti žiemą šiltuose kraštuose. Tai aš būtinai padarysiu, anksčiau ar vėliau. Kol kas

belieka puoselėti naminę oazę. Vazoniniai augalai šiuo metų laiku tampa tikrais gydytojais:

 ne tik valo pataplų orą, bet ir džiuginą akį, kelia nuotaiką. Ypač tokia žalumos jūra kaip

nuotraukoje viršuje. Dar labai norėčiau medžio namuose, tokio, kaip nuotraukoje

apačioje. Nežinau, kokia čia rūšis, bet atrodo nuostabiai.

Dining in color

I was looking for ways to do color in the dining room and here's what I found.

Nothing beats a colorful rug! Bright chairs really make a statement, especially when

in contrast with a vintage table. Those who are afraid that large colorful objects

might become an irritating distraction should remember that the eye gets used to

everything, and previously unbearably bright objects seem just right...

At least that's my experience. And then there are always paintings and vases

to experiment with.

Ieškodama idėjų, kaip valgomajame prijaukinti spalvas, priėjau prie štai tokių

 išvadų. Vienas paprasčiausių būdų tai padaryti - ryškus kilimas. Ryškios kėdės atrodo

ypač efektingai, kai kontrastuoja su senu stalu. Bijantys pirkti spalvotus baldus

 turėtų žinoti, kad tai tik laiko klausimas, kada akys apsipras, ir net ryškiausias

 kilimas taps nepastebimas. Tokia bent jau mano patirtis. Pasitikrinti

galima su ryškesniais paveikslais ir vazomis.

Le noir, c'est chic

 

Black stone, black ceramic tiles, black doors... Dark elements make these bathrooms

seem so elegant. But I keep wondering how often such black surfaces need to

 be cleaned. I mean, limescale shows on black more than it does on white,

 right? Doesn't it become kinda bothersome in the long run?.. Maybe I'm just lazy.

Or maybe chic bathrooms are immune to limescale.

Juodas akmuo, juoda keramika, juodos durys. Blizgūs tamsūs elementai

suteikia šioms vonioms prabangos ir elegancijos įspūdį. Tik aš vis susimąstau, kaip

dažnai tokius paviršius reikėtų valyti. Juk ant juodo paviršiaus kalkių

dėmės matosi labiau nei ant balto, ar ne? Bet gal aš tiesiog tinginė. Arba elegantiškose

voniose nesusidaro kalkės.
